New Battalion Chief, Police Officer, and Record-Setting Road Improvement
Yesterday, in the Costa Mesa CEO E-briefing, there were many announcements that bring great tidings of the civic development of Our City. From record-setting road improvement to a new battalion chief, there are many movements in a positive direction. Tim Vasin has become Our Cities newest battalion chief with the Costa Mesa Fire Department. Vasin joined the department in 1997. Later in the year, he was assigned to the paramedic program. In 2005, Vasin received promotion to fire captain, and and two years later was voted Firefighter of the Year. In 2009, he received the “Excellence, Effort, Expertise” Fire Award. Vasin has served on numerous city and fire department committees. He has stated that honesty, integrity and loyalty are his core values. Please welcome us in congratulating Battalion Chief Tim Vasin. Our City welcomes its newest police officer, Justin Carl Mahaffey. Mahaffey recently graduated from Orange County Sherriff’s Academy in Tustin after a rigorous six-month training program. Mahaffey grew up in Orange County and graduated from Tustin High School. He is a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, having joined the Corps in 2010. Mahaffey began as a Jail Custody Officer with Our City in April, 2012. Mahaffey currently serves as a reserve Marine multi-channel radio operator. Please join us in welcoming this Marine as Our Cities newest police officer. We thank him for his service, both as a Marine and a police officer. Recently, Our City has broken ground on a $6.2-million road improvement project near John Wayne Airport. This will be the largest single-street improvement in city history. Approximately 2.6-million square feet of street are to be re-surfaced. These improvements will be located in area bounded on the west by the Costa Mesa Freeway, on the south by Master Circle, on the north by Airport Loop Drive and on the east by Airway Avenue. Approximately 35,000 square feet of sidewalk, driveways and cross-gutters will also be repaired. With a completion date in March of 2014, this project will be funded by the Gas Tax, Measure M, and a $900,000 grant. Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries is looking for people to volunteer two to three hours a week. The Mesa Verde Branch Library bookstore and the Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Branch Library bookstore and Passport Reception Desk need volunteers. Training will be provided. If anyone is interested in being of service to Our Cities libraries, please contact Donna Stapleton at (714) 432-7752.
