Cuban Jazz Night
In the year 1940’s, there was once a members club located in Havana, Cuba where a group of musicians met up every night to play and share wonderful music. Come the year 1990, by the urging of Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder, that same group of musicians got together and recorded a Latin American, Son Cubano inspired album that received critical acclaim and a Grammy award too. These groups of musicians were known as the Buena Vista Social Club. The fame of Buena Vista Social Club garnered the attention of German filmmaker Wim Wenders which then inspired him to create a notable award-winning documentary about the music group that garnered Bueva Vista Social Club even more acclaim and newer followers.

Although, sadly some of the original members have already passed away, the group has welcomed new members (Carlos Calunga, Rolando Luna, and Omara Portuondo) to complete the group along with the original members (Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, Barbarito Torres, and Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos). The new 13-member group now forms the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club.

And from 10 years of musical acclaim and success, the group still continues to tour around the world and perform for their audiences. On September 17, 2013, performing for only one night at the Segerstorm Center for the Arts, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will grace Costa Mesa City. Cuban pianist Robert Fonseca and his quintet will be performing to open for the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. Fonseca’s most recent album “Yo” is a fusion of Cuban, jazz, and West African music. For the lovers of Jazz and the eclectic Latin American music, don’t miss this one night of great music and entertainment. Tickets are still available and see you at the Renee and Henry Concert Hall on the 17th of September!
