Three of The Best Coffee Shops In Costa Mesa
Sometimes the best places to get creative juices flowing will be at a quiet corner of a coffee shop, sitting on a soft cushion whilst smelling the enticing aroma of freshly ground coffee beans. If you’re not there to work or study, coffee shops have also been known to be the best place to just laze around and read a good novel from page to page. We have brought you Costa Mesa’s three most rated restaurants from Urbanspoon, this time we’d like to introduce you to three fabulous places in Costa Mesa where you could unwind, do a little work, reading, or catching up with friends. The most popular café would have to be Jeff Dugan’s Portola Coffee Lab down at Hyland Avenue. Using the same discipline of appropriating elements as he has during his undergraduate days pursuing Chemistry as a major, figuring out the exact science to really good coffee has become his new passion. Out of a number of failed attempts at perfecting his brew, coupled with perseverance, and the support of his friends and family, came the fruition of a quaint coffee shop renowned for it’s really good cup of joe.

Channeling his passion and dedicating his time and effort to searching for newer ways to properly roast coffee beans to perfection, he has flown all around the world to do research and explore the varieties of coffee beans and methods he could adopt and improve back home. As he states in an interview for OC Weekly, "We really felt customers would appreciate the natural flavors of coffee and wanted to create a coffee beverage that excited them," he says, his eyes widening. "We're getting them to understand that coffee has very unique nuances that they haven't experienced before."

For the Dugan family, it’s not just about concocting coffee with creative names served at a meticulously designed shop to achieve that alluring ambiance, but they believe it’s about concocting the best cup of joe and then the rest should just follow. Now down at Bristol Street you’ll come across a shop made up of red bricks and dark wood, with towering windows that could let a flood of sunlight in, allowing you to peek in the quirky interior of the Gypsy Den. Watch the video of owner Emily Meyer as she talks about what can be seen and expected from this wonderful café. Gypsy Den from Local Eyes on Vimeo. And lastly, a small and quiet hole-in-the-wall treasure located at Bristol Street is Milk + Honey. Their space might be small but their reputation is largely held as one of the notable coffee shops in the area. Probably housing about 6 tables inside, and less than a dozen out in the patio, the shop is intimate enough for a quick lunch date with a friend or an after dinner dessert with a date. Besides their coffee and other notable dishes on their menu, they are best known for having the best-tasting frozen yogurt in town!
