Protection of Natural Beauty in Our City

The city of Costa Mesa, working very closely with US Fish and Wildlife Service, has moved forward on a project to protect a vernal pool located in Fairview Park. This project, which began on Monday, September 9th, will repar any damage that has been caused, as well as protect the pool from encroachment in the future.A vernal pool is a pond created by rainfall. The pool in question was originally identifed over 2 decades ago. It was only recognized recently that preservation was necessary. The pool is located on a well-traveled trail in Fairview Park. While this could lend some difficulty to the preservation, the City Council of Costa Mesa has began this process with the installation of ropes around the pool. In addition, a park ambassador will guide visitors around the protected area. Signage is also being developed to assist in the education process of these pools. In addition, federal officials are considering numerous proposals the city has presented to preserve and protect an endangered species, the San Diego fairy shrimp. While this is just the beginning of protection of these vital wetlands, it is a step in the right direction.  The city should be applauded for their efforts in preserving natural beauty in such a pivotal park in our city. If anyone is interested in visiting the pool, it can be found adjacent to a fence that seperates Fairview Park from Parsons Field.
