Veterans + Labor: Veterans Day Event
Spearheaded by California Labor Federation, Orange County Employees Association, and various labor unions, the ‘Veterans and Labor – Partner In Service’ project brings you the celebration of Veterans Day to honor our heroes for their service and sacrifice for their love of country. The event will happen this Monday, November 11 at the state-owned property in Costa Mesa - OC Fair and Event Center, from 10am to 4pm.
The event grants free entrance and parking to anyone interested in celebrating this very important day. In the morning will be the motorcycle ride where riders will be expected to meet-up and assemble at the Orange County Labor Federation's Headquarters located at 309 N. Rampart St., Orange County by 10:30am and are to be expected to arrive at the fairgrounds by noon. Live entertainment and band performances, job access, a resource fair, and wheelchair giveaways for all veterans at the fairgrounds, which will be happening the entire day. The On-Site History Project-- where we will collate all memorabilla of historical events to be put up at an impromptu exhibit-- is one highlight of the program along with a special favorite of our veterans which are the holiday cards, thank-you notes, and care packages all prepared by the children and facilitated by teachers for veterans overseas and in hospitals. In light of this heartwarming activity, it’s important to note that according to a Vietnam-era Marine veteran and member of the Orange County Fair Board, such notes and care packages never fail to always touch the hearts of our hardened Marines upon receipt. The thought and act is overwhelmingly meaningful, he said. The U.S. Postal Service also chose this day to unveil their new Medal of Honor postage stamp in the West Coast. And of course, it has to be mentioned that there will be FREE hotdogs all day at the event! And who could say no to free hot dogs, right? To give a brief history in honor of the event- about 95 years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11, 1918), the “war to end all wars” was given a close when Germany yielded to the Allies and signed the armistice agreement. Although the war didn’t officially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France on June 28, 1919, the 11th of November was still declared as Veterans Day by our 28th president, Woodrow Wilson. And in June 1954, Veterans Day was amended to honor all war veterans and not just veterans of the 1st World War under the Act of 1938.
