THE STORY OF THE BOAT RESCUE ON 9/11 – A Short and Inspiring Memorial Video

When all the vehicle access points between Manhattan Island and the rest of the city were shut down, boats all all sizes and shapes rescued over 500,000 and took them to safety! It is a wonderful example of what can happen when people come together to help.It was the largest boatlift rescue in history. This moving account of the event is narrated by Tom Hanks:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDOrzF7B2Kg&feature=share

WHY IT’S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO ENTER YOUR HOUSE THROUGH YOUR BEDROOM WINDOW…

There was some excitement around 1230 Londonderry Saturday afternoon. We have new neighbors at 1226 and they are already an asset in the neighborhood. When they saw people climbing in the back window at 1230, they called the PD with that information. There was some delay before the police could get to the address, but when they did, there were 3 patrol cars on Londonderry and 3 more in the alley behind the fence as well as a helicopter overhead. They made contact with the young men in the home at 1230 and in the discussion it was confirmed the young men indeed were OK to be there. They had just locked themselves out of the house.I have spoken to the young man at 1230. He said it was just that the neighbors at 1226 had not yet met them to know he lived there. I asked the young man to go next door and introduce himself as quickly as possible. We are very grateful to the police for their response. If there is a possibility you or your children or anyone you know might climb in a window if they were locked out of their home, please think of a secure place to hide a key instead. Your neighborhood watching neighbors might see you climbing in your window, not recognize it was you even if you had met, and call the police.

NATIONWIDE, FBI SAYS VIOLENT AND PROPERTY CRIME WERE DOWN LAST YEAR

This is in an article by Pete Yost of the A.P. on p. 5 of the 9/20 OC Register. A criminologist is quoted, “The last thing we should do is get complacent… Without sufficient support for policing and crime prevention, the numbers can go back up.” Among other things, Att. Gen. Eric Holder said federal prosecutors and agents have worked with state and local law enforcement to increase community participation in protecting neighborhoods.University of Cincinnati professor John Eck, who teaches criminal justice research methods, said, “The connection between crime and the economy is an illusion.” He suggested that one important factor in driving down crime rates is improved policing practices that focus on high-crime locations in which “you are denying the criminal the ability to attack targets. Virtually every large city is doing something.”You can read Yost’s article in another paper here. The original FBI report is here. The eye-catching points are how important it is to educate the community and develop neighborhood watching and how much the police need our help in removing targets we can control and reporting to the PD suspicious activity, so they can be effective. Thanks to everyone who shares these e-newsletters with their friends and neighbors. The way to make sure your neighbors are getting this information is to set up an email list and send them yourself. The more of us involved, the bigger the difference we can make.

IF YOU THINK THE COYOTE ISSUE IS NEW OR HAVE NOT SEEN ONE IN YOUR YARD YET…

The 9/19 O.C. Register had an article reviewing the history of the coyote issue in Orange County and making some suggestions about what you can do to minimize your exposure – things we have discussed before. The bottom line is they are not going away and if you don’t pay attention, you are in danger of losing your pets. The complete article is here
