Tips On How To Keep A Move Organized

There is a lot of stress related to uprooting your entire family to move to a different home, all the more, when you decide to move to a different state. There are a lot of important things to keep in mind like arranging paperwork for your children’s transfer from school, keeping important documents like home titles, loan/mortgage papers in check, and keeping track of all the furniture you’re leaving in your old home and the furniture pieces you’ll be taking with you. Moving without a concrete schedule and system could really waste a lot of your time and effort, not to mention, could really cause you a lot of stress too.  That is why strategizing a move could minimize the stress caused upon families when that day comes. Below is a checklist of things you may use as a guide in creating a system for a stress-free move for the family:

  1. Organizer

Find an old notebook or purchase an organizer that’s handy enough to carry around or place in your bag. Create sections in this notebook by adding colorful Post-It tabs to keep things organized. Use your organizer for easy reference, notes, and reminders.

  • Create a checklist

The checklist will contain the outline of all the things you accomplish and take note of during the entire process of pre-moving, moving, and post-moving. List down all the important reminders, documents, and material things you need and tick everything off once everything is accounted for. This eliminates the brain and actual clutter.

  • Important contact numbers

List down all the important contact numbers that you will need from your real estate agent, your bank contact, your (potential) buyer/s, your builder, and the movers.

  • Inventory list

There are inventory list templates online that you can just print out or you can also have the option to create an inventory list for all your material possessions yourself. You can either categorize it per member of the family and per section of the house.

  • Schedule

The first few pages of an organizer have a monthly and weekly calendar. Use this to create a schedule for all the things you have to accomplish and meetings to be scheduled during the whole process. If you’re using an old notebook, you can create a calendar through Excel or Word and print it out.

  1. Important Document Container

Recycle an old envelope or purchase an expanding envelope where you can store and organize all the important paperwork with regard to your home. Expanding envelopes have a small packet on top where you can insert labels for easier reference.

  • Paperwork

Store all-important utility paperwork, legal documents, warranties, and other paperwork in one place for easier access and organization. Photocopying important documents may also come very handy for you, too.

  • Receipts

Be mindful to always keep copies of receipts. These are important for when you do your accounting at home, and for reference when it comes to billing, and talking to point persons during a move like your real estate agent, builders, movers, and buyers.
