Spring Home Maintenance Tips

After a dark, long winter, spring's warm winds and bright sun are a breath of fresh air. Here’s a checklist that will help you target those areas which require maintenance in order for you to quickly get your chores finished, and leave you time to go outdoors and play in the sun:Review Roof Shingles: Assess roof shingles to check if any were damaged or lost during the winter. If your house has an old roof covering, you might want to begin a budget for replacing them.Probe Wood Trim: With a screwdriver, probe the wood trim that surrounds the windows, decks, railings, and doors. Fix them now before the rains of spring do more damage to the wood that is exposed.Check Gutters: Look for leaky or loose gutters. Incorrect drainage may lead to water inside the crawl space or basement. Be certain the downspouts are draining away from foundation and are free and clear of debris.Evaluate the Concrete: Assess concrete slabs for indications of movement or cracks. All outside slabs except swimming pool decks ought to drain away from a residence's foundation. Fill all cracks using a silicone caulk or concrete crack filler.Move Firewood: You should remove firewood that is stored close to the house. Firewood must be stored at least 18” off of the ground at least 2’ from a structure.Check Outdoor Faucets: Check outdoor hose faucets for any freeze damage. Turn your water on and put your finger or thumb over the opening. If you’re able to stop the water from flowing, it’s likely the pipe in the house is damaged and is going to have to get replaced.Service the Air Conditioning Unit: Get a qualified cooling and heating contractor to service and clean the outdoor unit of the AC system.Assess Power Equipment: Evaluate your battery-and gas-powered lawn equipment to ensure it’s prepared for summertime use. Clean sharp cutting blades and equipment makes yardwork much easier.
