Depending on where your home is, you may already be experiencing the first signs of Spring. As we all know, with Spring quickly comes Summer. As a homeowner this means a lot of things, but most importantly prepping your home for Summer. Most of these things are fun, but before we get to that, there are a few to do items that we need to check off our list.

HVAC Maintenance

One of the best investments you can make in maintenance is to have your air conditioner routinely inspected. The last thing you want is for your AC to go out in the middle of a blistering hot day. Statistically speaking, this is the most likely time for your unit to malfunction given that it is working in overdrive to keep your home cool. A flush of the system and change of the filter are simple steps to keep your unit humming along. Not only that, but your unit will run more efficiently saving your energy and money.

Don't Overlook Your Windows

Your windows should not be looked over when prepping your home for Summer. Make sure they are free and clear of dirt and debris while inspecting for cracks or gaps. This is a quick and easy way to get ready for a long hot summer. Since windows do expand and contract with changes in temperature, you may need to do a few minor patches. This can be done with either caulk or foam. Securing your windows is a great way to insulate your home from pests and the elements.

 Test Your Alarms!

Make a habit to use this change or seasons to test all of your systems. Your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors should be at the top of this list. It takes only a moment, but it is still one of the most overlooked maintenance items in most households. The reasons that this is important go without saying.

 Every Nook and Cranny

Additionally there are other routine maintenance items that only take a little time but are often overlooked when prepping for summer. Pull out any major appliances such as your refrigerator or stove and clean the coils per manual instructions. This will not only improve efficiency but also extend the life of your appliances. You will also want to make sure the your chimney flue is closed and sealed. Otherwise, animals may make their way inside to build their nests. Generally speaking, it is likely that your house as accumulated a lot of dust so a general cleaning of rugs, fan blades, etc is a great idea. Opening up your windows and letting in some fresh air is a great way to rid your home of built up dust. Once all of the items are checked off your list, you should be ready to kick back and enjoy your Summer. Home ownership requires a lot of upkeep but is well worth the effort.
