5 Tips to Help You Organize Your Home
Getting your home organized might seem like a daunting task, and it can indeed be an overwhelming one. However you will find with a more organized home comes less stress and the ability to find things much quicker. Here are a few tips on how to get everything organized in order to make the task a little less overwhelming.
1. Don’t try and do everything all at once. When you decide that you are going to organize then start small and work on a single shelf or drawer and don’t move on until you’ve finished organizing it. It would be very helpful to have two boxes and a trash bag. Label one box “Put away” and the other “give away” and use the trash bag for trash. The “Put away” box should be empty by the time you’re done organizing and you can then move on.2. Don’t hold on to the stuff you don’t actually use. De-cluttering is one of the biggest parts of organizing. So when you’re deciding whether or not to keep something, ask yourself, ‘When have I last used this item?”. If you haven’t used the item in the last year you should definitely let it go. In that same vein with your closet turn all your hangers one way and after wearing an item hang it up the opposite way so you can get a better idea of what clothes you’re actually wearing and what you could stand to get rid of.3. Put “like” things together. You want to have all your towels in one place, right? And on top of that you would most likely want them in the storage area closest to the bathroom. Use this method for all of your organizing.4. Keep the kitchen clean. This seems to be the place with the most clutter. So make sure in the kitchen you get rid of the junk drawer, instead use drawer dividers to keep things organized and de-cluttered. With recipes, calendars, phone lists, schedules, etc make sure to organize them in a three ring binder. Keep the refrigerator organized by cleaning it out once a week. Add in lazy-susans, ministep shelves and racks to your vertical cupboards to claim more space.5. Clean as you go. It’s fairly logical but if you use it, put it away. If you open it, close it. If it’s full, empty it. If it’s garbage, trash it. Not allowing these things to pile up and sit is going to help you feel less stressed and keep everything organized.
