For All Costa Mesa Moms and Beyond...
There are many titles we give ourselves when people ask "who are you?" or more commonly "what do you do?"
So, with Mother's Day here and with much contemplative time to reflect on the identities we give ourselves, a single phrase or word often does not reflect the wholeness of oneself.
Yet with the word "Mother" much is known, much is said.
Mother to (child's name here) reflects the relationship between two people and an understanding of a role. To which I feel, is one of the most challenging, long reaching and often undervalued roles in our society. The juggling of time, family funds, multi-tasking non-stop for hours on end without the benefit of bonus pay for a job well done. Delayed gratification.
If you were in a business environment, the hours and lack of "hazard pay" would not be tolerated. Mothers execute these tasks and the reward, often years away, when their children are out on their own and hopefully engaging society in a productive, thoughtful manner. And, still, there is no guarantee.
Mother, does not have to be limited to having children. Are you not a Mother of an idea? One that can be nurtured and brought forth: music, author, storyteller, builder. Unlimited ideas and practices.
I have friends with no children, yet are Mothers to many as they choose to nurture others and take pride in their accomplishments.
Blood ties but not as strong as a passionate woman who shares her power with others. These selfless acts, no less than a Mother and her child. Those times reflect the best in us.
We are engaged in a time that is celebrating those who are working to keep us safe and secure. These daily sacrifices are the Heart of Mother.
Thank you then, to all of the Mothers of Others who have given so much to bring out the best in themselves and those they touch.
With Much Respect,
Valerie
